Fantastic, spring has arrived in style and set off a magnificent display of awesome colours and activity. Along with the vibrant, fresh colours of the spring garden I am delighted to see that the bee activity is really kicking in. In a small clump of crocus I spotted dozens of these wonderful creatures hard at work, doing what they do best. This is particularly heartening as there are many stories about the collapse of bee colonies around the country.
I hope you enjoy this small gallery of images. They are mainly crocus but also include an early flowering Rhododendron – even more surprising as this is growing on slightly alkali soil! You can see that the leaves have a few yellow blotches on where the roots are struggling to take up the necessary nutrients. To counter this, it gets fed regularly with an ericaceous fertiliser both to the leaves and roots – this will become more challenging as the plant grows!
