Gardening | Garden Design | Get the daffodils ready for next year!

April 25th, 2009 by Tim Matcham

Did you enjoy a display of daffodils in your garden this year?

Do you want to make sure that it is great again next year?

Here are some tips for ensuring that you do!

  1. Dead head the flowers. The seed heads take energy from the bulb and reduce its ability to perform next year.
  2. Leave the leaves as they are until they have gone completely yellow/brown. There used to be a time when it was regarded as proper to tie up the leaves in a sort of knot to make them look tidy – my advice is to leave them to gain maximum light exposure.

Why?

The leaves use the sunlight to photosynthesise – this is the plants way of renewing its energy and it is very powerful.

The roots do provide nutrients and minerals but the leaves really energise the plant.

Last year I had to rescue some bulbs that had their leaves removed shortly after flowering. They had to be replanted and this year not one has flowered. They will be left to their own devices this year and should recover to flower again next year.
