Plan what you want to achieve from your garden, set out your ideas on paper before you start work to save time and money.
How many of us visit the garden centre, see a plant we like, buy it, take it home then start thinking – now where shall we put this! Come on own up (yes I do it too sometimes). Frequently this will be an inappropriate purchase that is not suited to its job and the end result is frequently a plant that will not thrive.
By planning your garden and thinking about the uses and effects you want to create much of this waste can be prevented. You will also be much happier with the end result.
Planning a garden is quite straightforward. The best place to start is to measure your garden then create a scale drawing of the plot on a good size piece of paper (A3 is frequently adequate for smaller gardens). Make copies of your original drawing and use these as blanks for sketching ideas. It is much easier to change a pencil line than it is to re-site a patio or path once it has been laid!
Designing a garden is great fun and is very rewarding – enjoy it. Cheers Tim
